Merging Bathymetric-Topographic Data to Common Vertical Datum for Louisiana
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Robert Wilson, Dean Gesch

Fundamental to a GIS is the requirement to align spatial data to a common horizontal and vertical datum. Yet, while GIS has evolved to automatically transform spatial data, certain datum transformations, especially those referenced to tidal datums, are absent from the conversion toolbox. The absence of a vertical datum transformation tool makes it increasingly difficult to accurately map the land-water interface from disparate sources. The best available bathymetric and topographic data were extracted from NOAA's hydrographic database and the USGS National Elevation Dataset. NOAA bathymetry was transformed to the NAVD 88 using the VDatum transformation tool. The incorporation of the tidal datums into VDatum allows for the vertical transformation of elevations with respect to any of 28 orthometric, 3D, or tidal datums. A seamless bathymetric/topographic DEM covering the Louisiana coastline from Timbalier Bay to Baritaria Bay was produced at a grid spacing of 1 arc-second.
