Using GIS to Rebuild a Desert Enclave: Mesaieed, Qatar
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Cecilia Pinto

Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC) is a department of Qatar Petroleum (QP), Qatar's state-owned oil company responsible for the development and marketing of the country's oil/gas production. Located on the shores of the Arabian Gulf, the city of Mesaieed is managed by MIC Group Department, which is responsible for planning and managing the city's large industrial area, port, and adjacent Community/Residential area. MIC management has adopted GIS technology as its primary land management tool for Mesaieed City. It will be used for the planning and development of the city's fast growing residential area and for the expansion of its industrial and port areas. GIS will also be used extensively in the rebuilding/refurbishment of Mesaieed's neglected facilities and infrastructure (e.g., roads, water, electricity, sewage/drainage, telecommunications, parks, and housing). This paper details the ways GIS is being used in the redevelopment of Mesaieed--"a desert OASIS under development".
