Discovering the Depths With GIS in the Deep Sea
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): John Ruppel, Ruth Warner

For deep sea surveys it was typical to define track lines for estimated searching and surveying of the ocean's bottom floor. With the advancement of capabilities in ArcView and 3D imagery, we are now able to display search capabilities in "Real Time" to provide scientists the ability to optimize the sensor capabilities and make effective use of a vehicle's bottom time. This paper presents the solution used to allow for "Real Time" decision making for deep sea surveys, the pain points that are solved, and the values provided for a multi-year project. In addition, the paper includes the scientists' perspective and the benefits they foresee in collaboration between multi-year international expeditions to this site.
