Integrated Data Collection and GIS Applications with Personal Digital Assistants
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Joe Giacinto

In conjunction with ArcPad GIS applications, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) were used to collect and validate field data during a data collection effort. The PDA offered a mobile computing environment to locate, query, and edit spatial data in predetermined sampling grids, and collect field sampling data. The navigation capabilities of ArcPad and the collection of data on the PDA significantly improved the quality of data collected, through pull down menus of allowable values, and checking of permissible values. Wireless connectivity available through the PDA provided additional benefits of remote data uploads, and downloads of maps, documents and reports associated with site features.
