Geographic Information System Capability for Nuclear Emergency Response
Track: EMS, Fire and Disaster Management
Author(s): Albert Guber

The U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Remote Sensing Laboratory-Nellis (RSL) operated by Bechtel Nevada provides GIS support to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during nuclear emergency response activities. As directed by NNSA, the RSL GIS staff maintains databases and equipment for rapid field deployment during a radiological emergency response. For responses and exercises, GIS operators provide information products to on-site emergency managers as well as to emergency managers in Washington, D.C., and other locations around the country. Data products are derived from multiple information sources in the field including radiological prediction models, field measurements taken on the ground, aerial survey data, laboratory sample analyses, and protective action guidance based on data assessment. The GIS, which functions as a central data store, supplies the information to the response elements in the field and to oversight managers in other locations during radiological response activities.
