Merging Metadata Standards: ISO and FGDC
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Sharon Shin

ISO 19115 Metadata Standard was adopted by ANSI, American National Standards Institute, without modifications, on December 24, 2003. ISO 19139 ISO Metadata Implementation standard is scheduled for public review in the spring of 2004. These standards are not roadblocks but allow data to bridge the language gap and add granularity (feature metadata) into metadata. This paper addresses these standards and the FGDC metadata standard, their alignments and differences, and the advantages found in the ISO standard. The FGDC activities in regard to the standards and transboundary metadata activities conclude this presentation.
