Toward a Global Coral Map Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Phillip Fox Much of the scientific knowledge of coral reefs dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries, with the first global map of coral reefs produced by Darwin in 1842. UNEP-WCMC in support of the "World Atlas of Coral Reefs" undertook the first major revision. This revision has produced what is currently seen as the best and most accurate global dataset of coral reefs in existence.
