Review of Poverty Mapping Case Studies at the Country Level
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Glenn Hyman, Maarten Immink

The presentation will synthesize and discuss lessons learned from poverty mapping research activities, carried out in seven countries. The studies are part of a larger effort by FAO, UNEP and CGIAR to advance poverty and food security mapping methodologies and their application. The studies are also an activity that directly relates to the Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping Systems (FIVIMS) program. Each study is presented and discussed at the 2004 Esri User Conference. The seven cases are compared in the context of research and development questions common to most or all of the studies. What is the relationship between food security and poverty? Does geography matter in the analysis of poverty? What is the relationship between environment and poverty? The potential policy impacts of the research, as well as issues related to dissemination of maps and to information for use by decision-makers and others, will be discussed.
