Poverty Maps, Demographic and Economic Indicators on the Web El Salvador, Central America
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): David Marroquín

Background: Two years ago, the Dirección General de Estadística y Censos (DIGESTYC, El Salvador, Central America) --the census bureau-- began the GIS Unit, to convert the analogous cartography into digital for associating statistical information.

The goals are:

Disemination of statistical information on non conventional way

The easines of statistical info interpretation, providing a tool to decision takers

Along time, the "Encuesta de Hogares de Propósitos Múltiples" (Houses's Múltiple Purposes survey) has compiled information to "generate" a Poverty Municipal Map, by now has only 107 municipios, expecting a national basis results for September 2004.

Methodology: Is based on a commercial software application, developed by Esri, using as platform Windows Advanced Server (Microsoft). The application itself uses a web server IIS and ArcIMS, via ServletExec as connector and a RDBMS, residing on SQL, via ArcSDE.

The maps can be accessed through an internet browser, which requests ArcIMS which connects ArcSDE to the tabular database (SQL) to "construct internally" the application, sending back the result to ArcIMS, and then to the final user.

Results: By now DIGESTYC is presenting maps with departamental and municipal georeferenced information associated to Poverty information, analphabetism, people´s income, consignment (from national´s who are abroad), unemployment, etc.

Presenting those mentioned results on the internet has been one of the institution´s greatest challenges, resulting on the modernization of institution´s employees change of mind, changing the way "we have been working and thinking inside".

Another aggregated value was the "networking" of the institution to be online.

Conclusions: Through the Internet, DIGESTYC is providing valuable statistical information related to geography to the national and international community, filling a need, and leading the institution as first of a kind on Central America, "ranking first".
