Analysis of Urban Development in Lagos Coastal Area

The coastal area clearly show the impact of human activities on the environment. The coastal area presents theatres of invasion and succession, convergence and divergence, enrichment and impoverishment, erosion and deposition, resettlement and relocation, demolition and redevelopment, etc. The Lagos coastal area has experienced different phases of urbanization with their attendant problems. All these premise the peculiar nature of the area and its impacts on Lagos metropolis. This paper aims to appraise the peculiar nature of urban development to improve livability in the metropolis. It will examine existing land use development, identify developmental points (growth centers), and reduce the associated problems. Research methodology, with the application of geographic information technologies, is statistical in nature. The paper is expected to give direction to urban development policies, guide urban sprawl, reduce the incidence of environmental losses and, ultimately, contribute to human development.
