Developing a GIS Application with ArcGIS for a Wastewater Utility
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Ling Zhang, Jeremy Butrick

Little Rock Wastewater Utility (LRWU) operates 1,226 miles of sanitary sewer lines that provide sewer service to 64,317 customers. Attributes on over 32,200 manholes and sewer mains that comprise the everchanging pipe network is inventoried in a facilities database. The GIS department maintains this data along with 43 layers of planimetric data, and more than one thousand tiles of orthographic photography. GIS applications at LRWU implement the ArcObjects data model in VB/VBA programs that interface with the SDE geodatabase and Oracle database. Utility facilities data, planimetric data, and raster data inventories are maintained in the geodatabase. VB/VBA programs are developed for data input, management, and output. Quality control and assurance mechanisms are applied to ensure the correctness of data input and update. Data output includes the automated production of high quality maps in standardized formats, thematic mapping for various in-house projects, and inquiries and geocoding of the databases.
