Managing Groundwater in the Bunker Hill Basin, California
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Raymond Brown, Mike Wallace

The San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District overlies the Bunker Hill Groundwater Basin in southern California. Two of the biggest groundwater management challenges within the basin are high groundwater and groundwater contamination. High groundwater occurs within the area of the basin known as the Pressure Zone, or Area of Historic High Groundwater, and poses a possible public heath threat in the form of liquefaction which may occur in an earthquake event. In addition to high groundwater, basin management must also consider the multiple contaminate plumes within the basin. Since 1969, the basin has been examined by multiple agencies with assorted tools. The latest management tool, an improved database, will help the District better manage the basin through a better understanding of its geology, aquifers, water levels, water production, and contaminate plumes.
