Creating a Wildlife Observation Data Model for Washington Fish and Wildlife
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Joel Cappello

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) maintaines several spatial datasets that record location and other attributes of state and federally listed species and species of concern. Over the past 25 years, these data have been managed using legacy data systems made of incremental or piece meal enhancements to processes and applications. The system was characterized by inconsistent documentation, applications written in a plethora of languages and a highly denormalized and redundant data structure. As part of a larger project to convert to Esri's ArcGIS technology and to revamp the existing system, WDFW designed and implemented a new wildlife observation datamodel based on the relational design of the GeoDatabase in Microsoft's SQL Server.
