Distribution of Climate Change Data to the GIS Community
Track: Climate, Weather and Atmosphere
Author(s): Olga Wilhelmi, Jennifer Boehnert

Over the last decade, climate change has been one of the major research topics and policy issues world-wide. Recent assessments of climate change show that current and future impacts span from ecological and agricultural to hazards and human health. In preparation for the upcoming 4th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an extensive set of Climate Community Systems Model (CCSM) simulations of climate change was conducted and made available to the climate science community. In order to provide these model outputs to the GIS community interested in global climate change the GIS Initiative at the National Center for Atmospheric Research conducted the GIS Climate Change Scenarios project. The web-based GIS data portal provides free global datasets of climate change simulations in Esri GIS format. This presentation describes the GIS Climate Change Scenarios project, including progress, challenges, and limitations of integrating global climate modeling results with traditional GIS.
