Geodatabases in Three of Thirty Cincinnati Area Departments
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Andrew Swift

Over the last 15 years, many local governments, including Cincinnati Area GIS, have successfully used GIS technology to reduce costs of creating 'information products' and streamline workflows accross departmental boundaries. Over time we have developed large GIS databases. However, the design of our databases does not match well with the surrounding counties. Also, as our GIS program continually expands, we are finding that our data needs to be used for more than it was originally intended to be used for. The Data Models that Esri has provided online will help as a guide for agencies to convert from shapefiles to geodatabases. Hopefully, the Esri Data Models will serve as a starting point for GIS design nationwide. This paper will document, for better or worse, our experiences trying to download data models in three departments, and implement ArcGIS technology into departments that for many years have had established GIS tools.
