Utilizing Historical Sites to Stimulate Interest in an ArcIMS Web Site
Track: Archaeology
Author(s): Dean Jue

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric and Administration (NOAA) agency funded Florida State University (FSU) to develop an ecological characterization of the Apalachicola River basin in Florida. Long-time residents of the region tend to be lower-income with limited exposure or experience in using computers. The NOAA project called for the development of a web site to disseminate the results of the project. To help stimulate local interest in the website, FSU is working with local residents to develop an interactive historical map for each of the counties in the river basin accessible through an ArcIMS interface. This paper will discuss the results of those efforts as well as conclusions and recommendations for others that may wish to attempt a similar-type project.
