Comparative Study on Generation of Optimal Digital Elevation Model
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Author(s): Chang-Kyung Lee, Joong-hi Ryu

In this study, DEM for the test area were produced based on digital topographic maps, analytical plotter, digital photogrammetry and LiDAR. The DEMs generated by above 4 methods were investigated comparatively for the aspects of resolution, accuracy, production cost. During this procedure, Esri's technologies were used for producing each DEM. As a result of this study, a uniformly spaced grid was recommended for National DEM. The DEM generated by LIDAR showed the most accurate accuracy z, 0.1m. And the suitable RMSE z of DEM (grid space 5m) for contouring of topographic map(scale 1:1,000) in urban area is around 0.3m, that of DEM(grid space 10m) for contouring of topographic map (scale 1:5,000) is around 1.5m according to the standard accuracy of U.S.A. LiDAR especially has been evaluated as a proper DEM generation method fulfilling customers' demand for the accuracy and Esri's 3D technology was useful for DEM generation.
