Standardized Template Approach to Cartographic Map Production for Congress
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Ginny Mason, Jacob Zonn

The Congressional Cartography Program (CCP), housed in the Library of Congress, is designed to create cartographic products and GIS services for Congress and the Congressional Research Service. Requests received involve a wide range of subjects and cartographic styles and formats. CCP must provide services in a timely manner while maintaining high quality output. To facilitate production, standardized templates are developed for individual states, congressional districts, and the United States and territories. These templates define the standards for multi-scale cartographic styles and predefined extents and allow the ability to overlay requested data in a geospatial format. Mapping standards provide a way to gradually deploy GIS to Congress, while simultaneously freeing up time for CCP to create custom products and provide geographic analysis. This presentation will discuss the tools and methodology used to develop these standard template products geared toward high-level government officials.
