Abstract
Decision Management Tools Using GIS for Local Government Agencies Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Rick Burgess This paper will discuss how decision management for local government, in cooperation with federal and state agencies using GIS, is being implemented. Participants include public and private sector organizations including experts in many disciplines, professions and trades in order to deliver comprehensive GIS based information products usable by all participants. A demonstration project building on contributions of user groups utilizing a GIS ArcMap extension (HAZUS-MH) developed in a public/private partnership by FEMA is underway. The objective of this proposed project is to take the next step and demonstrate how HAZUS-MH can be used by three SW Florida counties (Lee, Charlotte, and Sarasota) to support risk assessment, mitigation, response, and recovery planning in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. This project aims to develop an organizational approach that can be replicated in other states and communities to facilitate the application of HAZUS-MH to support pre- and post-disaster planning.
