A Service Oriented Architecture to Support NYC Agencies Geospatial Initiatives
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Mario Gouvea

New York City's Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) is setting up a new infrastructure to extend the services it provides to include a highly available ArcGIS Server infrastructure combined with ArcIMS/ArcSDE and Oracle Spatial running on a grid computing architecture (Oracle RAC), which will provide business owners and developers with access to a wide range of geoprocessing tools previously unavailable on the server side. This represents a strategic move which allows DoITT to support not only the deployment of enterprise GIS applications to the public but also provide a centralized spatial data infrastructure and services such as geocoding, mapping, and business intelligence services to other agencies developing their own application through the use of Web services. This paper will cover the process of planning this new architecture and the deployment of a core set of Web services to support the development of custom applications requiring a spatial component.
