HAZUS-MH MR1 and Its New Capabilities
Track: Federal Government Systems
Author(s): Edward Laatsch, Barbara Schauer

Multi-hazard HAZUS (HAZUS-MH) was released by FEMA in February 2004 with state-of-the-art integrated earthquake, flood, and hurricane loss models utilizing ArcGIS 8.3 and a new COM-based architecture. HAZUS allows users to simulate the effects of these natural hazards on communities. Using estimates of potential damage and loss, users are able to better plan for natural disasters and more effectively respond to them. More development has taken place since then and the newly released HAZUS-MH Maintenance Release 1 (MR1) uses ArcGIS 9 and has advanced beyond the initial release with optimized software and hazard models. In addition, HAZUS now has the ability to define hurricanes by downloading forecasts and weather advisory data directly from the Internet and several other new capabilities. New HAZUS developments and capabilities will be discussed and demonstrated during this session.
