Visual Driving Images Add a New Dimension to GIS
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Howard Shieh, Jason Dong

Most GIS datasets present a top view of the area of interest. Technology now enables GIS users to create driving images cost-effectively. By associating images with the GIS map layer, users can click on the road to view a driving simulation on a desktop application or on a browser. The images are fully integrated with ArcGIS. Geo-referenced objects can be created using mouse clicks on the image, and the dimensions of the objects in the image can be measured. Users can select a database record to view corresponding images or click on an object in an image to view the database record. The solution is used for both asset inventory and pavement management solutions. This presentation will show how Esri technologies are utilized to deliver the solution. The results of several projects that used the images to complete asset inventory and field data validation will be presented.
