Paper
Use of Multi-Criteria Analyses to Facilitate Decision Making
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Arnout Heuven

To facilitate decision making in projects concerning water management, spatial planning and environmental quality, GIS-analyses, in combination with Multi-Criteria Analyses (MCA), has proven to be very successful. Three projects will be presented in which the use of "hard" data (groundwater, elevation model) is combined with more subjective information (social cohesion, strategy). The first project shows an environmental audit of a harbour. In order to make an assessment of the port concerning the regulations for new EU-member states, data about security, safety, and environmental quality aspects will be combined. The second project, located in the Netherlands, shows the selection of areas for water retention combined with drought-prevention by using advanced GIS-analyses. The last project demonstrates opportunities for urban development in a region that is vulnerable to high groundwater levels. The presentation will finish with a discussion about the positive and negative aspects of using MCA.
