Abstract
Visualization and Exploitation of LIDAR Point Cloud Data Using ArcGIS Track: Remote Sensing Imagery Author(s): Jeremy Loomis LIDAR data is an increasingly important type of remotely sensed data. Handling it as sampled points or as a simple elevation raster restricts the power of the raw point cloud for display, analysis, and exploitation. This paper will present a system based on the LAS file format, which allows the user to operate on a full collection of laser returns. The core of the system is LIDAR Analyst, an extension to ArcGIS that can be used inside of ArcCatalog, ArcMap, ArcScene, and ArcGlobe. The system supports importing data from ASCII files, provides dynamic visualization of massive point clouds, and offers an extensible exploitation system for rasterization, TIN generation, filtering, point classification, and feature extraction. The system empowers analysts to conduct a wide variety of LIDAR tasks, including generating digital surface models, bare earth mapping, change detection, object identification, forest attribute measurement, and automated feature extraction.
