Community-Based Environmental Monitoring with ArcIMS: The OakMapper Web Site
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Karin Tuxen, Maggi Kelly

A Internet-based mapping application was developed with ArcIMS that distributes information about trees confirmed with Sudden Oak Death (SOD) and collects information from a wide community of users about trees suspected of having SOD. SOD is a disease affecting many tree and shrub species in California. Because these communities are extremely important for habitat provision, recreation, and aesthetics, research of and community interest in this disease is very high. The Kelly Lab at UC Berkeley has helped develop a monitoring strategy that combines traditional environmental monitoring, community-based monitoring, Geographic Information Sciences, and Internet technology. This presentation will include the development, implementation, and usage of the webGIS application, including the latest results from public use of the site and user survey. Some of the common application problems associated with the project will be discussed, including the larger societal issues of public participation GIS (PPGIS), such as differential access, quality control, and privacy.
