Abstract
Using Today's Technology to Solve Yesterday's Problems Track: Environmental Management Author(s): Frank Sidari III Coupling environmental standards with redevelopment of Brownfields is a challenge for concerned landowners. This challenge is what a client faced when they began to remediate a site from years of slag disposal which contained low levels of radiological material. A combination of GPS and traditional survey methods were used to collect spatial information across the 20+ acres of the site. The spatial information was then coupled with analytical data from more than 200 borings and wells to depths up to 20 feet. ArcView 8.3 was utilized with the ArcView Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions to estimate the extent of contamination. The contaminated areas were then confirmed with analytical data plots, and eventually polygons were created to define the clean-up areas across the site at every 2-foot depth interval. GIS and GPS will again be implemented during remediation to continually monitor in real time the status of the remediation effort.
