Multimodal Freight Routing for the Commodity Flow Survey
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Stephen Lewis

In partnership with the Census Bureau, BTS conducts the Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) every 5 years. The survey returns a wealth of information on commodity flows but doesn't include detailed routing information about how the shipments traveled. Only ZIP Code of origin, ZIP Code of destination, and mode sequence (e.g., truck-rail-truck) are reported for how each shipment traveled. BTS is tasked with turning that information into a multi-modal route for each shipment in the survey. For each of the past CFS's, this task was performed outside of the GIS environment. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) developed routines in FORTRAN and FoxPro to route the shipments. The logic that went into these routines is very good, but the implementation of the logic is now technologically outdated. BTS is now partnering with ORNL, Esri, and MacroSys to translate this logic to a GIS environment. This presentation will cover our work plan and progress to date.
