The Importance of GIS-Centric Software Applications and Certification
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): John Przybyla, Brian Haslam

Many software applications are available on the market which claim to be Esri GIS compatible. But what does compatibility mean? Why is compatibility important for interoperability and data sharing? How can buyers distinguish between one product that provides minimal or hard-to-use GIS integration from another that is fundamentally Esri GIS-based and tightly coupled. The National Association of GIS-Centric Software (NAGCS) was created as an association of Esri Authorized Developers dedicated to promoting truly GIS-Centric applications that are based on the Esri geodatabase and promote interoperability with other like applications. This presentation will discuss the concepts behind NAGCS, the requirements for developing NAGCS-compliant software, and the NAGCS certification process.
