GIS/CMMS: Attribute Verification/Collection of Infrastructure in Newport News, Virginia
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Timothy DeSalvo, Jim Kiles

Since the turn of the 19th century the City of Newport News, Virginia, has been known as the provider of the nation's finest, technologically advanced military ships. In more recent years, Newport News has also become a center for international commerce, research and technology. Now the City's APWA Certified Public Works Department is being recognized nationally for their successful implementation of an Asset Management strategy with a foundation built on Esri and Azteca's GIS-Centric CMMS "Cityworks" technology and tools. The focus of this presentation will be on the processes and procedures to effectively work in the field to verify and collect infrastructure attribution and spatial location. In addition, the methods and logistics to successfully manage the flow of this information from the field to office within their enterprise GIS/CMMS system will be explained. The presentation will cover the lessons learned when developing the tools and business processes to enhance the overall data quality and completeness during routine cyclical maintenance.
