Real-Time Weather Data Delivery for Transportation Using ArcSDE and ArcIMS
Track: Transportation
Author(s): James Mitchell, Shawn Truelson, Eugene Waara, Jacqui Sanchez

Transportation operations are heavily influenced by weather conditions. This includes the entire gambit of transportation activities from construction to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Relatively common weather events such as cold, snow, rain, etc., can halt many construction tasks. High winds can cause large trucks to cease operations. All of these combine to affect the safety of all travelers along the highway system. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is using Meteorlogix to deliver near real-time weather information to DOTD, other state agencies, and the general public. The heart of this system is an ArcSDE/DB2 geodatabase that is regularly updated via FTP and scripting with current weather from Meteorlogix. Information is disseminated via the Internet using ArcIMS. The design and implementation of the system will be described. Applications such as traveler information (511), emergency operations (hurricanes, floods, etc.), truck permitting, and severe weather alerts for construction and field crews will be described.
