Marketing Your GIS: What Does GIS Do for the Citizen?

A GIS is not an "if you build it they will come" product. You will have to market your GIS. What if you don't have a marketing department? You can either promote your GIS yourself or hire outside help. The Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission has used both methods. They have learned many lessons about what is effective, including how to simplify and tailor the message to the audience and how to get more marketing for less money. The showcase item of NKAPC's marketing effort was the redesign of the ArcIMS Web site. The resulting changes not only made the Web site more aesthetically pleasing bu,t more importantly, improved the ease of use for the average citizen. Since these changes, the NKAPC ArcIMS Web site has experienced an increase in overall hits and return visitors per day.
