Using Predictive Modeling to Detect Potential Erosion Sources
Track: Modeling
Author(s): Yu Shimizu

By using data from a variety of sources, the MCB Butler Environmental Branch created a comprehensive GRID and 3D models of land use, soil, vegetation classifications, and projected site construction impacts. Feature identifications were developed from GPS data sets, hi-resolution imagery, CAD, and engineering documents. Also rectified visible image bands that were isolated for their spectral properties were used to identify conditions in the watershed. Specialized GRID coverage models of slope ranges, land-cover type, flow, and slope length were used to detect possible areas of soil erosion and to identify sediment collection points. By manipulating the models we were able to simulate what impact changes in either slope, vegetation, or soils might have on existing site conditions.
