Abstract
Desktop GIS in U.S. Coast Guard Operations Track: Homeland Security/Homeland Defense Author(s): Robert Netsch The United States Coast Guard belongs to the Department of Homeland Security and is tasked with a wide range of operational responsibilities from Search and Rescue to Marine Environmental Protection to Port Security. The Commercial Joint Mapping Toolkit (C/JMTK) is a government initiative to provide ArcGIS to federal government agencies for use with their Command and Control (C2) and Decision Support Systems. In 2006 the Coast Guard will field a C/JMTK based Mapping Framework with custom extensions to meet the needs of operational commanders. It will be at this point that the USCG first experiences desktop GIS on a wide scale in direct support of real time operations.
