Virginia DOT's ITS Portal
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Brian Smith, David Sutton, Thomas Gergel

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has initiated the Virginia Transport Information Portal (VTIP) project to facilitate access to its current roadway incident information. The goal of VTIP is to provide a near real-time view of traffic incidents in the Staunton, Salem, and Bristol Districts, which constitute the Interstate 81 corridor in Virginia. By making this information easily accessible in one software platform, this application will support effective and responsive decision making at the VDOT Smart Traffic Centers. This presentation will discuss the technology involved in building the application as well as the VDOT perspective as to why the pilot was implemented, how it is being used, why the specific data sources/layers were incorporated, and the funding sources that are being utilized.
