GIS Supports Military Munitions Reconnaissance
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Trisha Smith

Following an accidental burning of 640 acres, a time-critical removal action (TCRA) was implemented at Fort Ord to locate and remove munitions of concern (MEC) from the devegetated area. Field implementation of a GIS enabled the team to effectively manage data collection, reporting, and project status tracking. An ArcGIS 8.3 platform was used in conjunction with an MS Access Database. A GPS provided navigation and the field data collection interface. With sub-meter accuracy, grid boundaries were marked, sweep team paths were registered, MEC and historical feature locations were recorded, and formerly inaccessible areas were mapped. The GIS managed the field data to provide near real-time spatial, statistical, and topographical analysis of MEC. These data were used to create field maps, QA/QC figures, detonation activity notification figures, and final report figures and tables. GIS technology contributed to the efficiency of project implementation and ensured that the aggressive project schedule was met.
