Developing a Geocoding Service for Your Place
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Author(s): G. Ian Bowles

Geocoding involves matching an address to either a specific point or a point on a line. Because addresses are common for identifying spatial location, precise geocoding is important in many applications. Automated procedures make this efficient with respect to large databases but can also cause minor problems. This paper will explore the methods available in ArcGIS 8 and 9 to change standardized words, abbreviations, and procedures in order to make them more efficient for a particular place. Using these techniques, one can develop a geocoding service tailored to the names and patterns of the locality.

In the area around Little Rock, Arkansas, we have been able to improve match rates by almost 10%, through simple changes in our database to match the standards and changing the methods of standardization where appropriate to match our data.
