Animate Hurricanes in ArcIMS
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Stephen Hodge, Georgianna Strode

ArcIMS can be combined with an external database using Java

to produce weather animations. In this presentation, animations were

created of hurricane paths and wind speeds for a historical hurricane

tracking database, which contains data from 1851 to the present. On an

interactive map, the user can choose any storm in the database and see

both the track and intensity of the storm. The icon used to depict the

storm track changes color according to the intensity of the storm at any

particular location, so the user can see not only where the storm went,

but also how strong it was along its track. This information can be

very useful from both a research and educational standpoint, and the

visual presentation of the data enables communication to the user in a

far more informative manner than is present in a standard database file.
