Spatial Decision Support for Translocating Threatened Species
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Frank Davenport, Thomas Leuteritz, Paul Burgess, Nathan Strout

The decline of the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is a challenge for scientists and land managers in the Western Mojave. Identifying a solution requires analysis of interdependent physical, social, economic, and political factors. The Redlands Institute is using Ecosystem Management Decision Support (EMDS) to assist scientists and managers focusing on tortoise recovery and translocation. The presentation will include an overview of the problem, quantitative and qualitative methods used, the results of the model, and outcome of the project. Discussion topics will focus on the geoprocessing and decision models generated for the project and their applicability to general species translocation and environmental management issues.
