Driving GIS from the Street
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Scott Harris, Cliff Wilson

Baltimore City and County have embarked on a strategic and aggressive field assessment of all valves and fire hydrants to dramatically improve the operability and information on their large and aging water system. Field assessments (and subsequent repairs and replacements) coupled with system flow testing provides not only the features and attributes for meaningful analysis in GIS but also a more operable system and a framework for more efficient operations and focused capital investment. This program is a critical component in Baltimore's overall strategy of increasing the efficiency of one of the East Coast's largest water systems.
