Applying ArcGIS in Pipeline Risk Assessment
Track: Petroleum and Pipeline Transmission
Author(s): Gordon Ye

Using up-to-date aerial ortho-photography and cadastral GIS data that are available now at reasonable costs, pipeline engineers at Pacific Gas and Electric Company are able to make accurate determination of land use patterns around natural gas transmission pipelines spanning a 700 mile-wide service territory in California. This allows us to run spatial analysis algorithms on an ArcGIS/VBA platform to derive High Consequence Areas (HCA) and Class Locations mandated by federal regulations. Significant cost savings and accuracy improvement are achieved for risk management and compliance.
