Abstract
Disease Surveillance and Response Systems Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Christopher Goranson The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is centralizing its GIS activities to better support its existing disease surveillance systems currently utilized for the early detection of disease and potential biological terrorism. Through the development of the GIS Center, DOHMH provides a central, secure spatial data repository that connects to GIS support systems. The DOHMH's Emergency Awareness Application facilitates the identification or confirmation of environmental hazard areas for emergency response purposes. Data stored in the GIS Center Repository and the GIS Public Health Portal provide both internal and external users with information for rapid analysis. New data are fed via XML from other internal applications like the Environmental Handheld which provides users in the field with a way to collect and send real-time location-based information. This paper will outline the overall objectives of the GIS Center and implementation strategies and challenges encountered during integration processes.
