Maps in Apps: ArcIMS Web Applications at the Chicago Transit Authority
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Alex Kavanagh

To assess the productivity of transit services at the Chicago Transit Authority, it is important that ridership and spatial data be readily available via intranet web applications. The data is used to evaluate existing service levels and to make necessary adjustments to routings, hours of operation, running times, headways, and timetables. CTA uses ArcIMS mapping services in conjunction with intranet applications for distributing Automated Fare Collection (AFC) data and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) data to its users. The ability to create maps on-the-fly is critical to developing a Bus Location Information System, which relies on GPS "timepoints" and AVL data to determine running-time schedule adherence. Other Web-based applications, which use Active Server Pages (ASP) to report AFC data as interactive, easy-to-read tables and graphs, are also enhanced by using ArcIMS mapping services.
