Evaluating Address and Structure Coordinates in Local GIS Files
Track: Census and Geodemographics
Author(s): Ross Davis

The U.S. Census Bureau maintains a database of the addresses and locations of all known living quarters in the United States and Puerto Rico. This database, known as the Master Address File (MAF), is constantly updated through various automated, clerical, and field operations. One update strategy is the use of geospatial files provided by local governments. The Census Bureau currently is evaluating addresses and associated structure coordinates contained in these files, using Esri software. First, the Census Bureau uses an ArcObjects application to perform a preliminary assessment of each local file. Once the file passes this evaluation, the Census Bureau conducts a field check, using ArcPad. ArcGIS is then used to geocode local file records and ultimately to update the MAF. The Census Bureau continues to obtain local files that meet MAF content and accuracy requirements.
