USGS EROS Data Center 2004 Hurricane Response
Track: Disaster Mangagement and Emergency Response
Author(s): Brian Granneman, Brenda Jones, Ron Risty

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) EROS Data Center (EDC) responds to emergencies on behalf of various government agencies for human-induced and natural disasters and is FEMA's executive agent for the acquisition and coordination of commercial and civil government aerial and satellite remote sensing during national disaster response operations. During the 2004 hurricane season this response consisted of satellite tasking, image and vector data acquisitions, image registrations, data processing, Web-based mapping services, product delivery, and post-disaster data archiving. Pre and post disaster data acquisitions were provided by and delivered to a variety of Federal, State, and local agencies for use in response and recovery operations. These new acquisitions augmented eight base layers provided by The National Map and were incorporated into a Web-based browser and data delivery service, The National Map Hazards Data Distribution System (HDDS). The data will eventually be placed in an off-line archive for historical purposes.
