Delivering Real-Time Highway Information Using ArcSDE/DB2 and ArcIMS
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Jacqui Sanchez, Dan Nichols, Jim Mitchell

Providing highway conditions and traveler information is becoming an increasingly important service for state departments of transportation. Emergency evacuation routes and other homeland security issues require large amounts of real-time data for their successful management. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and 511 are evolving into important mechanisms to inform the public. The system must be robust and capable of delivering information quickly and accurately, while providing the maximum amount of information. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and IBM are designing a system that can gather data from within DOTD, as well as other state agencies (State Police, Homeland Security). The system involves entering data in a Lotus Notes application, transferring it into DB2 databases and using ArcSDE with ArcIMS to deliver the information. The design and implementation of the system will be described. Applications such as traveler information (511), emergency operations (hurricanes, floods, etc.), and truck permitting will be described.
