Beyond Maps: GIS Support of Transit-Oriented Development Planning
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Kearey Smith, Garlynn Woodsong

Discover how GIS is used to support the development of Smart Growth and Transit Oriented Development (TOD) policies in the San Francisco Bay Area region. The overall goal of MTC's "Transit Oriented Developments at Bay Area Transit Stations" project is to create a comprehensive set of information that can be used as an informational foundation for effective policies to support transit oriented developments at Bay Area transit stations. The study has created a comprehensive set of information for the entire Bay Area regarding plans, proposals, and land use status in the vicinity of transit stations/corridors. Because this is an ongoing effort, the study will report impediments to such developments and will explore steps to support implementation of Smart Growth and transit-oriented development, as well as other land use development strategies that support transit usage. A discussion will be presented that outlines how GIS is used to facilitate the policy and decision making process.
