Placer Dome's Spatial Data Infrastructure Strategy
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): Andrew Scott

Placer Dome (PDG), one of the largest Gold Mining companies of the world, has embarked on a strategy to improve the way in which it manages data throughout all its operations. Part of this strategy is to implement an efficient Spatial Data Infrastructure which would enable easier sharing of common data sets, collaborative data analysis, remote data auditing, and "Quality Assurance and Quality Control" workflow. The chosen platform for the Spatial Data Infrastructure within Placer Dome is ArcSDE for data storage, ArcIMS for Web access, Web Feature Services (WFS) + Web Map Service (WMS) serving, and Metadata searching (through metadata explorer). The client base is predominantly ArcGIS and ArcView, but due to the interaction with Junior companies on Joint venture projects we have the need to support many other clients, such as MapInfo, TNT Maps, and Mine planning systems such as Vulcan and Datamine. The WFS + WMS work well to facilitate interoperability.
