Cartographic Development for the U.S. Census Bureau's Handheld LAMI Device
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Mike DeGennaro

The U.S. Census Bureau will use handheld computers, running a customized version of ArcPad software, to conduct the 2006 Census Test Address Canvassing operation. The device to be used, known as the Listing and Mapping Instrument (LAMI), will aid Census field employees in navigating to their assignment areas, collecting the required address information and updating map data for the Census Bureau's TIGER database. One of the challenging aspects of this project has been the design of the device's mapping component. This presentation will discuss some of the cartographic issues we faced in developing the required maps and tools for the project, as well as some of the strategies we devised to resolve the technical difficulties that were encountered in this mobile computing environment.
