Growth Area Mapping Project
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Angela Stokes

The Growth Area Mapping Project was started in 1999 by the State Planning Office (SPO) with hopes to map designated growth areas that are consistent with the Planning and Land Use Regulation Act. The project was not treated as a priority and was tossed to the side for five years. I came on board to get the project back on its feet. To complete this project, there were tasks that needed to be done: collect, interpret, catalogue, digitize, store, and manage municipal land use plans. After the maps were digitized, the main objective was to enter the land use information into the attribute data. The information in ArcGIS is not available to the public, but only to state agencies and municipalities. Once the project is completed the state will use it as a guide for state growth related capital investments and to improve the quality of life in Maine.
