Creating National Hydrography Dataset Associated Feature Classes
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Greg Enstrom, Brian Sanborn

The USDA-Forest Service has developed an ArcGIS tool for creating simple point and polylineM feature classes that reference the commonly used USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) geodatabase for surface water hydrology. Its genesis: a need to leave the coverage world behind and to implement geodatabase feature classes in future tools. The Forest Service Natural Resource Information System supports water resource hydrologists, fisheries biologists, aquatic ecologists and other natural resource professionals nationally and is a strong USGS partner. A GIS tool was needed to delineate points and line segments coincident with the NHD for water resource data management, reporting, and analysis. Development history, issues, and solutions will be presented.
